Moldova, European Union sign agreement on 100-million-euros-worth financial assistance

Moldova and the European Union signed a package of documents on the providing of macro-financial assistance worth 100 million euros to Moldova in Brussels today. Forty million euros is provided as grant and 60 million euros represents a loan. The document was signed by European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs Pierre Moscovici, Finance Minister Octavian Armasu and Governor of the National Bank of Moldova Sergio Cioclea, in the presence of Prime Minister Pavel Filip.  

  

The set of documents on the earmarking of the financial support is to be immediately submitted to parliament for ratification and meanwhile, efforts are taken to fulfill the conditions for the reception of the first installment of the loan.   

 

Prime Minister Pavel Filip and European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs Pierre Moscovici voiced confidence in the ensuring of the efficient interaction on all the period of allocation of the macro-financial assistance.  

 

During the dialogue, Pavel Filip and Pierre Moscovici analyzed also the most recent economic developments in Moldova. Thus, the officials highlighted the positive results of the evaluation mission of the International Monetary Fund, which allowed reaching a staff-level agreement within the second assessment of the Programme. According to the PM, the IMF’s findings confirm the progress carried out in the implementation of the priority reforms.  

 

The prime minister noted that efforts were further undertaken to improve the banking sector and the business environment, in order to prove a change of system as regards the counteraction of corruption, money laundering and frauds. In particular, decision-makers pay attention to improving the transparency of stockholders, ensuring the good governance and managing the risks in banks. The coming of new banking actors to Moldova is encouraged.    

 

For his part, the European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs appreciated the cabinet’s efforts for stabilizing the economy and encouraging the reforms’ continuation. Also, Pierre Moscovici expressed support for ensuring a sustainable economic development, strengthening the banking system and further enforcing the European standards in the customs field, in line with the commitments taken in the Moldova-European Union Association Agreement.
