Acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi has conveyed a message on the World Press Free Dom Day:

„Twenty eight years ago, the United Nations Organization’s General Assembly declared the 3 May day as the World Press Freedom Day. I take advantage of this occasion to convey, on behalf of the government, a strong message of support and appreciation for the mass media from Moldova.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) marks the current issue of the World Press Freedom Day under the sign of recalling about to the need to observe authorities’ commitment for the freedom of press, of reflection among mass media professionals about the problems of the press freedom and professional ethics. Also, this is a day of memory for the journalists who lost their lives while looking for the truth.

Dear journalists,

Your profession, in the spirit of the deontological code, is the guarantee of a democratic and free society, in which the wide public is to be informed objectively and in time. Your daily work and efforts is synonymous with the truth, courage and professional correctitude.

For the second year in a row, the World Press Freedom Day has been marked in a context marked by the pandemic, with the enforcement of emergency measures in the sanitary, social and economic fields, which boosts the need of informing the people. The role of the mass media institutions in counteracting the pandemic is beyond doubt – you are the ones who learn and distribute reliable and verified information. At the same time, you represent the most specialized corps of professionals, capable of combating fake news and misinformation, providing the truthful information to Moldova’s citizens.

On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, I call on the public and governmental communicators, by the side of whom journalists ensure the right of access to information to the wide public. In the context, the full observance of the principles of press freedom and freedom of expression, laid down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, European Convention on Human Rights, in other international documents and conventions, Moldova is party to, must be ensured by the state according to the best practices and technical possibilities available at the moment.

Dear mass media representatives,

On a period when the citizens’ informing is vital, I want to thank you for the effort you take. Remain free, independent and anchored in the ideals of the democracy which we edify together!

I wish you health and inspiration.”
