The government has assumed responsibility for a draft law which provides for amendment of the rules for selecting candidates for the position of Prosecutor General. The decision was approved at a today’s cabinet meeting.

Under the proposed changes, the prime minister will be the one who will pre-select at least two candidates for the position of Prosecutor General. Subsequently, the list of candidates will be sent to the Superior Council of Prosecutors, who will submit to the head of state the nomination for the position of Prosecutor General.

"I am ready to take on this responsibility to identify the list of candidates for the post of Prosecutor General, candidates to trust that they are honest people who will work only for citizens, in accordance with the law," Prime Minister Maia Sandu said.

The rules for appointing the Prosecutor General were amended by parliament in September this year. Based on them, recently, the Ministry of Justice has initiated the selection of candidates. Today, however, Justice Minister Olesea Stamate announced that the results of the contest for the selection of candidates for the position of Prosecutor General will be canceled, as "a member of the selection commission offered a disproportionate score to the candidates, which also affected the results of the contest".

Under the Constitution, the government can take responsibility before the parliament on a program, a general policy statement or a bill. If a censure motion is not submitted within 3 days, the program, the general policy statement or the draft law shall be considered adopted.
