Prime Minister Ion Chicu today had a discussion with the German Economic Team (GET). GET consults the governments of Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia and Uzbekistan in the reformation of the economic policies and sustainable development of the economic framework.

Ion Chicu referred to the evolution of the epidemiological situation and the economic effects of the restriction measures imposed, in order to prevent the spread of the infection and create new social skills. The PM noted that it was still not clear which restrictions, to what extent and when would be lifted. He stressed that the government was not set to prolong the emergency state.

The GET team appreciated the way the cabinet had managed the epidemiological situation and the measures undertaken to attenuate the economic effects. The team highlighted the compensation of the interests on the bank loans and the set of fiscal measures.

GET informed the prime minister about the results of an analysis of the economic impact of the epidemiological crisis in Moldova, carried out by experts Jorg Radeke, Dmitry Chervyakov and Ricardo Giucci in last April. The research forecasts a 6.3-per cent contraction of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2020 against 2019.

GET welcomed the quick progress of the government in the discussions with IMF and the World Bank in the sense of getting emergency financings and recommends that the cabinet identifies also other sustainable sources of crediting for financing measures of economic resuscitation. For 2021, GET forecasts a 5.5-per cent increase of the GDP against 2020, an 8.8-per cent increase in exports and a 23-per cent growth of imports.
