Prime Minister has meeting with European Parliament president

The latest developments in the Moldova-European Union dialogue and the priorities of the country’s domestic and foreign policy were the main subjects tackled at a joint meeting of Prime Minister Maia Sandu and Parliament Speaker Zinaida Grecianii with European Parliament President David-Maria Sassoli in Brussels today.

 

At the meeting, Prime Minister Maia Sandu stressed the priorities of the present government: promotion of honest people to key offices, fighting corruption, reformation of the law system, as well as the investigation of the bank fraud, ensuring the independence of justice and mass media, due to guarantee the strengthening of Moldova as a democratic state and a reliable partner. Maia Sandu noted that the goals would re-establish the trust of the citizens in Moldova and would stimulate the cooperation between Moldova and EU. Also, the prime minister stressed the need to return to the proportional electoral system and organization of free and fair local elections in next autumn. “The changes underway must ensure the creation of democratic institutions in Moldova, so that this process is irreversible, as well as the improvement of the living standards of all our citizens and ensuring needed conditions for the Diaspora citizens to be willing to return home.”      

 

At the same time, the prime minister congratulated David-Maria Sassoli on his swearing in the office of European Parliament president. In the context, Maia Sandu reiterated the importance of the close cooperation with the European Parliament and European Commission for the implementation of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement and ensuring an irreversible process of the country’s democratization.

 

For his part, the European Parliament president confirmed the EU’s support for Moldova to successfully implement the European agenda assumed. “You should prove that you have a pluralist political system and this will be the first act of your reliability,” David-Maria Sassoli stressed.

 

In the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister made an invitation to the European Parliament president to visit Chisinau. David-Maria Sassoli accepted the invitation, noting that he would visit Moldova soon.
