Prime Minister meets President of Venice Commission

Prime Minister Ion Chicu met President of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) Gianni Buquicchio in Strasbourg today. The prime minister congratulated the official on his re-election to the office of Venice Commission’s president and wished him a successful mandate.

 

The main subject of the discussions was focused on the justice reform in Moldova. In the context, the prime minister confirmed that this was the priority No 1 of the government.

 

The prime minister informed that the cabinet had taken note of the Joint Interim Opinion of the Venice Commission and the Directorate of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe on the draft law on the reform of the Supreme Court of Justice and the Prosecutor’s Office. The prime minister noted that the adjusted draft law would be soon presented for the adoption of the Final Opinion at a session of the Venice Commission, due in March 2020.   

   

The prime minister highly appreciated the importance of the dialogue between Moldova and the Venice Commission, stressing that he further relied on the Commission’s assistance in the process of carrying out the reforms in the justice sector.
