Giurgiulești International Free Port: modernization and more efficient management
Giurgiulești International Free Port will benefit from better conditions for development, investment, and the expansion of its logistical capacities, and will be designated as a strategic port infrastructure asset. The Government has approved an amendment to the Law on the activity of the Port in order to strengthen its role in regional trade and support the national economy.
Thus, clearer rules are being established for investors and for the companies operating in the Port. Port management will be improved by clearly defining the responsibilities between the investor and the residents – each party will have well‑defined obligations, which will result in more transparent and efficient administration.
An important element is the alignment of customs and tax regulations with European Union standards, which will make the Port more attractive to investors. It should be noted that the adopted changes do not introduce any additional taxes or obligations for the companies operating in the Port.
Thanks to these amendments, the Port will be able to operate beyond 2030, when the period set out in the current regulations was due to expire. Activity will continue without interruption, and investors will benefit from long‑term stability. Giurgiulești Port is the main access point of the Republic of Moldova to international maritime and river transport. Together with the Giurgiulești Passenger and Cargo Port, it forms the Giurgiulești port complex – an essential logistics hub for the country’s foreign trade.
It should be recalled that on 31 December 2025, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development signed the sale agreement for Danube Logistics, the operator of Giurgiulești International Free Port, to the National Company Maritime Ports Administration SA Constanța.
The new owner has committed to making long‑term investments for the development of the port. These investments aim at modernizing the infrastructure, expanding port capacities, and improving services for operators. In addition, the port is to be more closely integrated into the commercial and logistics network of the Port of Constanța.
