347,161 residents of the Transnistrian region hold citizenship of the Republic of Moldova

According to data provided by the Public Services Agency, as of June 30, 2025, the State Population Register recorded 375,044 individuals from the Transnistrian region (including domicile, temporary residence, and other forms of registration). Of this total, 354,718 persons are domiciled on the left bank of the Nistru River and in the municipality of Bender; 347,161 hold citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, and 7,557 are foreign citizens.
According to the same source, 264,692 residents of the Transnistrian region possess valid internal identity documents, while 232,669 hold valid passports issued to citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
As a result of amendments simplifying the procedure for acquiring citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, during the period from April 19, 2018, to June 30, 2025, under these legal provisions, 43,505 individuals have been recognized as citizens of the Republic of Moldova. Of these, 28,197 (approximately 65%) are residents of the left bank of the Nistru River and the municipality of Bender, who obtained identity documents issued to citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
The documentation process for residents of the left bank of the Nistru River reflects the constant commitment of the Moldovan authorities to facilitate their reintegration within the national legal framework, ensuring their access to public services and guaranteeing fundamental rights. At the same time, citizens of the Republic of Moldova benefit from multiple advantages offered by the country’s status as a candidate for accession to the European Union, including free movement within the EU and access to numerous economic, educational, and social opportunities.
