Human rights situation in the Transnistrian region discussed at a national conference

On September 19, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian and representatives of the Bureau for Reintegration Policies took part in the national conference „Situation of human rights in the Transnistrian region”, organized by the Promo-LEX Association with the financial support of the Soros-Moldova Foundation and the National Endowment for Democracy.
In his speech, Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Serebrian evoked the permanent concern of the public authorities in Chișinău about the human rights issues in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, including the situation of Romanian-language schools, farmers from Dubăsari district, political prisoners, barriers encountered on the way of free movement of journalists and human rights defenders from the right bank of the Nistru River.
At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister thanked the representatives of the associative and diplomatic environment, in particular the OSCE Mission to Moldova, for their continuous support and proactive involvement in individual cases of human rights violations.
During the first panel discussion, the Head of the Bureau for Reintegration Policies Alin Gvidiani noted the need to strengthen institutional efforts at all levels (civil service, media, academic, associative) in coordination with relevant international partners to effectively and immediately intervene in cases of violation of fundamental rights and freedoms and to facilitate their restoration in accordance with the standards of international law.
Meanwhile, within the framework of the conference, the participants also discussed the Transnistrian settlement process in the context of the European integration of the Republic of Moldova and the regional security architecture, the main problems on this path, the medium and long-term strengths for both banks of the Nistru River.
The annual conference brought together representatives of public authorities, civil society, the diplomatic corps and the donor community, national and international experts with extensive experience in the field of protecting and promoting human rights.
