More than 358 thousand residents of the Transnistrian region are citizens of the Republic of Moldova
According to the information provided by the Public Services Agency, as of March 31, 2024, the State Population Register recorded 367 776 residents domiciled in the Transnistrian region, among whom:
– 358 814 are citizens of the Republic of Moldova;
– 337 654 have a passport of a citizen of the Republic of Moldova;
– 292 177 have an identity card of a citizen of the Republic of Moldova.
Between April 19, 2018, and March 31, 2024, 37 405 individuals were recognized as citizens of the Republic of Moldova, of which 25 474 (about 68%) are residents from the left bank of the Nistru River and the municipality of Bender who have already obtained identity documents of the Republic of Moldova. It is worth noting that from January 1, 2024, to March 31, 2024, 1 010 individuals acquired Moldovan citizenship through recognition, through restoration of citizenship, through naturalization, which is about 50% of the total number of people who received citizenship of the Republic Moldova in 2023.
The Government Decision No. 286/2019 on the approval of the Instructions for certifying civil status facts that took place and registered in settlements on the left bank of the Dniester and the municipality. Bender, based on the positive obligations of the Republic of Moldova to citizens living in localities currently outside the control of constitutional bodies, has created a legal mechanism in this area.
Between April 19, 2018, and March 31, 2024, for applicants from the Transnistrian region, 2 928 national model civil status documents were issued, 1 859 duplicates were issued at the request of the residents of the region, and 2 253 individuals requested the certification of civil status facts.
There is a constant dynamic in the process of documenting foreign citizens living in the Transnistrian region with national model documents. During the specified period, 8 962 individuals were registered, of whom 4 043 received permanent residence permits, 1 575 – temporary residence permits, 1 213 – identity cards for stateless persons, 9 – identity cards for refugees and 12 – identity cards for beneficiaries of humanitarian protection.
