The situation of human rights in the Transnistrian region, discussed in the framework of an international conference
The Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian participated today in the International Conference "Situation of human rights in the occupied territories of candidate or potential candidate countries for joining the European Union: Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia", an event organized by the Promo-LEX Association with the financial support of the Foundation Soros-Moldova and the National Endowment for Democracy in partnership with the Reintegration Policies Bureau.
During the conference, the participants, national and international experts with experience in the field of defense and promotion of human rights in the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia, as well as representatives of public authorities, civil society, the diplomatic corps and the donor community, discussed the situation of human rights in the territories temporarily occupied and effectively uncontrolled from the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia and the possible strategies/interventions to remedy the situation.
In his message, Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Serebrian condemned the violations of human rights in the Transnistrian region, signaling the lack of responsiveness of Tiraspol to Chisinau's proposals to solve existing problems, such as: access of journalists on the left bank of the Nistru River and the municipality of Bender, free movement of citizens, access to agricultural land, to public services, the right to study in Romanian language, etc.
In March 2022, the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia submitted applications to join the European Union. Later, in June 2022, the European Council granted the status of candidate countries to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, Georgia received the status of a potential candidate country.
