Construction of Bălți-Suceava overhead power line: EBRD provides €15.4 million grant for project implementation

26 February 2025, Chișinău - The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing the Republic of Moldova with a €15.4 million grant for the construction of the 400 kV Bălți-Suceava overhead power line. The government approved the draft law today for the ratification of an Agreement to this effect. The construction of the line is expected to be completed in December 2027.
It involves the construction of a 400 kV power transmission line that will connect the municipality of Bălți with the municipality of Suceava in Romania, as well as the reconstruction of 400 kV Balti electrical substation. Some segments of the power networks will also be rehabilitated, including the replacement of transformers, switching and protection elements.
The implementation of the project will enhance the energy security of the Republic of Moldova by integrating into ENTSO-E network and will increase opportunities for the development of other energy sources, including renewables.
The grant covers 20% of the total value of the Interconnection of Electricity Networks between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, Phase II project, which amounts to €77 million. The remaining funding, in the form of repayable financing, has already been provided by the EBRD and the European Investment Bank, each contributing €30.8 million.
The grant agreement will come into effect after ratification by Parliament.
