Moldovan government approves new measures to manage country's reservoirs, ponds

29 January 2025, Chișinău - Water resources and hydrotechnical structures will be managed more efficiently, ensuring a prompt response in case of emergency. The new measures, approved by the Government, will help prevent events that could have severe consequences for communities and ecosystems near lakes and ponds.
The approved project promotes safe and sustainable practices for managing water resources, prioritizing the protection of citizens and environment. The main measures focus on installing water level monitoring equipment according to current technical standards, as well as establishing land relations between landowners and water resource users to confirm the legal status of the lands used.
At the same time, dams with expired operational periods will be technically evaluated, and dam administrators will be required to monitor the water levels in lakes and ponds and enter the data into a registry. This will be submitted once every three months to the public institution in the meteorology and hydrology and once a year, by May 1, to the authority responsible for water resource management.
Ddata on exploitation of lakes will be recorded in State Water Cadastre system, managed by the National Administration Apele Moldovei.
Following the torrential rains and floods of 2024, Prime Minister Dorin Recean requested an inventory of the country's reservoirs and protective dams, as well as improvement to the legislation in the field to eliminate future flood risks and minimize the destruction caused by torrents.
