Moldovan government approves reorganization of Police: law-enforcers to more quickly respond to citizens' requests

3 april 2025, Chișinău - The response time of police officers will decrease by at least 15 minutes and the Police's activity will be more efficient and transparent. The government approved a draft on the reorganization of the Police, which will improve the activity of law enforcers and ensure a more efficient use of resources.

Under the draft, the Police are set to be regionalized. In particular, there will be three regional departments - North, Center and South, as well as two territorial ones - of the Chisinau municipality and Autonomous Territorial Unit (UTA) Gagauzia.

In the context of the regionalization, more police officers who currently have administrative obligations and are involved in bureaucratic tasks will be transferred to duties on site. This measure will allow for better management of staff and increase the speed of emergency response.

Also, the principle of the nearest patrol will be implemented, so that interventions are faster, regardless of the request area and the district inspectorate it belongs to.

“This structural reorganization is quite welcome. I remind you, our goal is to be there within a maximum of 15 minutes where citizens call us - whether it is about the services provided by the Interior Ministry or the emergency service from the Ministry of Health,” emphasized Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

The draft also provides a clear delimitation of the powers of the Police and the General Inspectorate of Carabineers (IGC). Thus, the main responsibility of the Police will be maintaining public order and safety, while the carabineers will intervene only in special situations, when additional support is needed.
