Moldovan government invests in modernizing Chisinau-based centralized thermal energy supply system
15 January 2025, Chișinău - The consumers of thermal energy from Chisinau will be able to cut their expenses by up to 30 per cent. The government has approved the ratification of the Agreement on loan between Moldova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) on the carrying out of the project, Optimization of the centralized thermal energy supply system from the Chisinau municipality.
The project implies a radical modernization of the heating supply system from the Moldovan capital, through the setting of 2,510 individual thermal points, the switch of 1,665 blocks of flats to a horizontal system of distribution of thermal agent, carrying out of 57 pilot projects on thermal insulation of the selected apartment buildings, rehabilitation of the primary thermal networks and the construction of two pumping stations.
The measures are aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency and improving the comfort of the citizens, who will be able to manage the resources depending on the needs. Thus, consumers will be able to connect or disconnect the supply with heating in flats and to independently regulate the consumption of energy.
At the same time, savings of natural gas will be made, due to the combined production of thermal and electric energy, with the dependence of energy imports reduced.
„This is an unprecedented project. A half of the apartment buildings from Chisinau will be transformed, in essence. Thus, including the look of the blocks of flats from the capital will be changed. All residents of Chisinau will be encouraged and helped to switch to this new system, which saves energy and allows each one to decide on how to heat his/her apartment,’’ Prime Minister Dorin Recean said.
The EBRD’s contribution, worth over 143 million euros, represents a part of the overall value of the project of 326 million euro. The project is also backed by the European Investment Bank and by grants provided by the European Union, Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership and the European Union’s Neighbourhood Investments Platform.
