17 January 2025, Chișinău - The carrying out of the priority energy infrastructure projects for Moldova today was discussed at a meeting of the Supervision Committee of the Consolidated Unit for the Implementation and Monitoring of Projects in Energy Sector (UCIPE), chaired by Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

PM Dorin Recean stressed that, in the current context, it was necessary to speed up the carrying out of the energy infrastructure projects, as they are essential for the country’s energy security. ‘’ We must reduce at the maximum the bureaucratic procedures, so that the pace of carrying out of the works should be quick,’’ the prime minister said.

The principal projects implemented at present are: construction of the 400 kV overhead power line (OPL) Vulcanesti-Chisinau, modernization of the Chisinau power station, extension of the Vulcanesti power station, construction of a new centre of controller’s office at the Moldelectrica state enterprise, improvement of the efficiency of the system of centralized supply with thermal energy, energy optimization of ten hospitals of Moldova, etc.

According to the report unveiled by UCIPE, the current challenges deal with the carrying out of the works on the terms established, the limited local capacities of projects’ elaboration, carrying out of the process of lands’ expropriation, logistic difficulties because of the war, as well as the bids presented by the companies.

Also, decision-makers are to analyze possibility to attract the consultancy needed and increase the human resources involved in the projects’ carrying out.

This year, the project, Sustainable Transition through Energy Efficiency in Moldova (STEEM Project) will be started, which implies the carrying out of energy efficiency measures in 46 education institutions, setting of individual thermal points and other activities. Another project, Initiative for Sustainable Public Infrastructure Renovation of Energy Efficiency (INSPIREE) is aimed at implementing energy efficiency measures in 16 buildings of the higher education institutions.

Also, the PM referred to the perspectives of the creation of an energy park, which will make available the endowments and conditions of work necessary to the energy producers.

UCIPE was set up in 2000, in order to enhance the efficiency of the investment, financial and technical assistance projects of Moldova. So far, the institution has implemented projects of strategic importance, among which the interconnection of the gas transport systems from Romania and Moldova; elaboration of the feasibility study for the synchronous connection of the energy systems from Ukraine and Moldova to the ENTSO-E European continental system, as well as projects concerning the enhancing of the energy efficiency and renewable energy.
