Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu says peace fragile, all share responsibility to protect it
On the Day of Memory and Gratitude, marked on March 2, the heroes who sacrificed their lives in the 1992 Transnistria War to defend the integrity and independence of Moldova are commemorated throughout the country.

In her speech, President Maia Sandu stressed that today, 34 years after the outbreak of the war on the Dniester, peace and freedom were once again under threat, and they are being defended by Ukrainians on the battlefield. The head of state specified that, in both the 1992 war and in the war in Ukraine, the aggressor is Russia. “Moldova has not coveted foreign territories, has not started wars, and has only defended its ancestral land. And to this day, the aggression against our country has not disappeared, only the methods have changed. While in 1992, the aggression came with tanks, today it comes through propaganda, manipulation and disinformation,” said President Maia Sandu, calling for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Moldova.
In his message for the Day of Memory and Gratitude, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu said that the lessons of the war from 34 years ago remained relevant. “Peace is fragile and we all share the responsibility to protect it. Peace unites us, just as we are united by the effort to leave our children a free, independent and prosperous Moldova,” noted the prime minister.
As a sign of gratitude, on the occasion of the Day of Memory and Gratitude, persons with disabilities as a result of combat actions for defending the territorial integrity and independence of Moldova, as well as the families of those who fell in battle, receive financial assistance in the amount of 1,000 lei. In addition, these persons, as well as other categories of participants in military actions, will receive, starting January 1, 2026, an increased monthly allowance of 1,914 lei, and persons with disabilities as a result of the war – 2,784 lei. At present, 27,316 people benefit from this financial support.
The Day of Memory and Gratitude was established in 2021 by a parliament decision. More than 30,000 compatriots fought in the war on the Dniester, of whom 321 lost their lives.
