29 January 2025, Chișinău - Eligible renewable energy producers will have priority in obtaining connection approvals to electrical grid. A decision to this effect was approved at today's cabinet meeting.

The document provides for a 6-year obligation for system operators to grant access to the grid for renewable energy producers benefitting from the "fixed price" support scheme. This means that requests from large eligible producers for connection approval will be placed at the top of the waiting list, and in the absence of the requested capacities, alternative solutions will be proposed for areas where capacity is available in the electrical networks.

The project is necessary in the context that out of the 96 valid approvals, with a total capacity of around 1600 MW, only 5% have actually been connected to the electricity grid. This limits the possibility for investors with genuine intentions to develop renewable power plants.

In the long term, the project will contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy production in our country's electricity mix and fulfilling Moldova's commitment to a minimum of 30% of electricity consumption produced from renewable sources by 2030. The first tenders are underway to grant large eligible producer status, with allocated capacities of 105 MW for wind installations and 60 MW for photovoltaic plants.
