Moldovan PM, foreign partners discuss situation in energy sector, additional possibilities of support
16 January 2025, Chișinău - Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Moldova’s development partners today analyzed the challenges triggered by the situation in the energy sector and the impact on the economy and the citizens, with emphasis on the Transnistrian region.
PM Recean thanked the partners for the solid assistance provided to Moldova, including on this period, when Russia ceased the supply with natural gas of the Transnistrian region.
The interlocutors discussed ways of support, in order to attenuate the impact of the interruption of the deliveries of natural gas on the citizens and companies, for short term, and to contribute to the energy security of the entire region, for long-term. The sides also discussed a list of needs concerning the foreign assistance, meant to support both Moldova’s citizens and the state’s institutions, in order to consolidate the energy and economic resilience of the country.
The prime minister informed the development partners about the measures already undertaken by the Moldovan authorities, referring to the support provided to the residents from the Security Zone, which are affected by the disconnections from power supply to which Tiraspol-based decision-makers resort. ‘’Moldova will continue helping the people from the region, as well as the efforts of dialogue with the Tiraspol administration. If they want a real mechanism of gas delivery, we are ready to provide it,’’ the prime minister said.
At the same time, the participants in the meeting emphasized the compensations for energy provided to the citizens on the right bank of Dniester, as well as the programme of compensations for entrepreneurs. The PM stressed that, for long term, the energy optimization and the increase in the share of the renewable energy were essential.
For their part, the international partners expressed openness to back, both for short and for long terms, the authorities and the citizens, in order to overcome this situation. Presently, the sides discuss possibilities to contribute to the increase in the value of the energy vulnerability reduction fund.
