The Delegation of the Republic of Moldova draws attention of the Joint Control Commission to the illegal checkpoints installed by Tiraspol and requests their removal
The movement obstacles created by Tiraspol in the Security Zone by illegally installing border posts and barriers around localities under the jurisdiction of constitutional authorities, as well as blocking the activity of military observers of the Joint Peacekeeping Forces, are the issues brought up into discussion by Chisinau representatives at the meeting of the Joint Control Commission convened in Bender on 21 May.
It has been highlighted that, under the pretext of managing the state of emergency, Tiraspol authorities are trying to draw a "border" in the Security Zone, and in order to achieve their intentions they resort to blocking the activity of military observers. All these actions hinder the Security Zone monitoring mechanism. Likewise, the passive position of the Heads of the Dubasari and Bender military commands, who did not intervene in remedying the situation, proves Tiraspol's defiance of the peacekeeping operation on Nistru and generates citizens’ distrust towards the format of this operation.
The Moldovan delegation insisted on eliminating illegal posts, unblocking the activity of military observers, and also launched the idea to include the OSCE Mission representatives into the military observers group within the Joint Peacekeeping Forces. Currently, the military observers group is composed of representatives of the Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation, Ukraine and Transnistria.
The initiative of the Moldovan delegation to include into the meeting Agenda the examination and assessment of the Joint Military Command activity in ensuring the functioning of peacekeeping mechanisms in the anti-COVID-19 context was not supported.
The subject proposed by the representative of the Russian Federation since July 2019, which involves a complex assessment of the current situation in the Security Zone and the emergence of illegal checkpoints, was not accepted for discussion by the Transnistrian side.
A new meeting of the Joint Control Commission will take place in a week, also in Bender.
