People on both banks of Nistru will benefit from protective equipment provided by the EU
The Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Cristina Lesnic, took part in the handover ceremony of a batch of protective equipment and consumables aimed for population on both banks of Nistru, donated by the European Union through the “Confidence Building Measures” Programme.
The official thanked the development partners for provided assistance, which helps improving the working conditions of doctors and establishing an effective dialogue.
"The Government is concerned about population’s health on both banks of Nistru. In the short term, our focus is to ensure that the health system employees can perform their job safely, while in the medium and long term – to avoid negative effects on the economy. We are grateful to the development partners, the EU Delegation and UNDP, for the assistance offered in a prompt and flexible manner, as well as for coordinating the response to limit the pandemic and reduce its negative effects”, said Cristina Lesnic.
The offered equipment consists of 400 masks, 10.000 pairs of shoe covers, 400 protective uniforms, 30 thermometers for remote temperature monitoring, two spirometers, two portable electrocardiographs, two sterilizers, an oxygen concentrator and a portable pulse-oximeter for pulse measurement and oxygen saturation, as well as disinfectants, purchased with European funds and offered to some medical centers on both banks of Nistru. This assistance was provided under the "Confidence Building Measures" Programme.
"The European Union supports the Republic of Moldova in fighting against the new coronavirus. The personal protective equipment, as well as the medical equipment, offered by us, are meant to help people in the front line, who endanger their own safety to save lives during a pandemic. It is a model of local, regional and global solidarity. The pandemic cannot be stopped by the effort of a single country. This assistance is in addition to the recently announced support that the European Union will provide to the Eastern Partnership Member States. Together we are stronger", stated Peter Michalko, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova.
The protective equipment will help reduce the risk of infection that people in the COVID-19 counteraction front line face on a daily basis: medical staff and local public authorities. Local volunteers, as well as people from vulnerable groups, will also benefit from it.
