Moldovan government approves new draft law on medicines

12 February 2025, Chișinău - The pharmaceutical sector will be regulated by a new law. The implementation of the new provisions will improve the process of drugs’ production and distribution. This will ensure a higher level of public health protection, access to safe and effective treatments, as well as a transparent regulatory system for the pharmaceutical industry.

Among the main provisions, there are the ensuring of the quality and safety of medicines by introducing new requirements for testing, authorization and monitoring. At the same time, the market surveillance system will be strengthened, and tougher measures will be enforced against counterfeit medicines.

The document aims to reduce the shortage of essential medicines, attract foreign manufacturers to the national market, enhance the competitiveness of the pharmaceutical market and facilitate the state's participation in international clinical trials. These factors will provide patients with diverse options for medicines, advantageous prices and quality medical services.

The law also regulates parallel imports, establishing a clear system for introducing authorized medicines into the market from other countries, in order to ensure continuous supply and competitive prices.

The law introduces clear rules regarding the prescription and dispensing of medicines, establishing the differentiation between prescription medicines and the ones which can be dispensed without a prescription.
