WHO recommendations following the technical visit to the Transnistrian region were forwarded to Tiraspol
Recommendations of the World Health Organization on actions to be taken in regards to COVID-19 pandemic were forwarded to Tiraspol. The announcement was made today by the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Cristina Lesnic, during a press conference. These recommendations were made following a technical visit to the Transnistrian region, at Chisinau’s request.
"We had some concerns about the quality of actions on limiting the spread of the new coronavirus, and also about treatment protocols and statistics presented, following self-isolation of the Transnistrian region and their unwillingness to cooperate with the Chisinau authorities. In order to have accurate information about the situation of our citizens on the left bank of the Nistru, we asked the WHO representatives to evaluate all the mentioned aspects", said the Deputy Prime Minister, Cristina Lesnic.
Information was collected during several visits to the medical institutions and through on-site interviews with health professionals, using the WHO tool on operational readiness with a focus on detection and response.
The WHO recommendations are divided into several chapters, including the laboratory system, risk surveillance and assessment, proper case management, infections prevention and control, risk communication, logistics, procurement and supply management.
Thus, WHO recommends standardizing the case definition for people who qualify for COVID-19 testing; strengthening the capacity of local surveillance specialists in line with international standards for event-based surveillance; elaborating standard operational procedures regarding joint information exchange with the National Public Health Agency and other issues.
For management of infections cases management, WHO recommends reviewing protocols to comply with the COVID-19 Treatment Protocols of the Republic of Moldova, and establishing standard operating procedures for exchange of patients and information together with Chisinau hospitals, etc.
Chisinau remains open for cooperation in order to apply the list of recommendations stated above. Such collaboration would be beneficial on COVID-19 response and would also contribute to strengthening the public health sector in the Republic of Moldova.
The Deputy Prime Minister thanked the front-line doctors from both banks of the Nistru for their heroic work, who believe they should help people free of any political context.
Acknowledgment was also addressed to the representatives of the WHO and UNICEF, including donors who supported this request of Chisinau.
